Posted by devisimone on 01/04/2006 AWESOME! Posted by seeni on 12/18/2005 when good potatoes die, they go to heaven Posted by cement_truck on 12/10/2005 Really good (authentic) South Indian Food Posted by dr_deadly on 12/08/2005 The eGullet Society For Culinary Arts & Letter a geek - "Dosa Restaurant - San Francisco, Easily the best Indian in the city today" Yelp Avery G.- "Two appetizers, two main courses, three beers and a "chai russian" - a variant of a white russian using chai and soju instead of Kahlua and vodka came to $61 without tax. We'll certainly return here - next time saving room to try one of the tempting desserts. " Teresa P.. - "Dosa - the new Indian! Dosa is the best new restaurant to hit the Mission district. The Mission, so known for its eclectic mash-up of authentic restaurants featuring cuisine from around the globe, Dosa brings something even more unique - not just Indian food, but Southern Indian food. You have to try Chennai Chicken and the Masala Dosa - delicious! Choose a glass of wine or ask for a nice pairing suggestion from the friendly staff (or owners - a husband and wife duo) and the commendable dining experience gets taken to yet a higher level of amazing satisfaction - fine job Dosa!" Max H. - "In the high school of restaurants within walking distance of my home, Dosa would be the cool exchange student that made friends with everyone quicker than you ever did. Delicious!" Lee G.- "I was recomended by friends to go and try this new restaurant and what a breath of fresh air.A unique but delicious menu serving items that I have never tasted before but we loved everything we and will be back again before we leave San Fran .I especially loved the wine a Galleron merlot which was surprisingly affordable coupled with a new experience in Indian food that was awesome. The Dosas were to die for." Janelle H. - "The second dish we ordered was the South inidan moons uttapam. it came w/ a variety of flat cakish bread: Potato, peas(or green onion), tomato and cheese, spinach, and white onion. came w/ the same dips and soups. this was absolutley delightful. its true, the flavors are tantalizing to the tongue" Suzanne B. - "Best part - a very nicely balanced wine list. The mark-ups on bottles seem reasonable and the selections match the food very well. I could come back, sit down with dosa or two and happily work my way through the by-the-glass selections." anita c.- "I was really pleased with how reasonable the prices were. For less than $45 per person, including tax and tip, we had 2 bottles of wine and a handful of beers, plus a ton of food. Our order included a refreshing chickpea salad, a pair of appetizers -- crispy-spicy potato croquets and lush lentil dumplings -- three dosai (paneer, egg, and rava masala), and two of the curries: a deeply spiced Tamil lamb, and a prawn coconut masala... oh, and a giant bathura. Each dosa came with its own bowl of sambar, plus two smooth chutneys: a gingery coconut one and a spicy tomato version." Jamie T. - "I loved it! I've been visting in South India and I was missing so much the food there (breakfast with thick dosa like pancakes) with medium spicy yummy chutneys -that when I went to Dosa and found my favorite thick dosas I was very very happy!" theo m. - "My wife and I have treked over from the East Bay twice now in 3 weeks to eat a Dosa as we were so intrigued and impressed the first time and convined the second! Dosa is the perfect meld of outstanding and original dishes, a warm and hopping atmosphere, and an eclectic and fair priced wine list. All we could ask for is a car service to take us home as we were far too full and happy to feel like driving or barting back. Open Dosa on College Avenue and we promise you will succeed!" Jeremy H. - ""great food, awesome hosts, groovy atmosphere, gorgeous interior... but temper that with loud crowds and lots of valencia corridor hipsters. Go early in the week or early in the evening. the dosa's really are super tastay (as was every menu item we tried), and the beer/wine selection is wonderful." Jill W. - "I went to Dosa on the opening weekend and am in love with the food. The atmosphere was really fun and enticing, and the food was a welcome change to typical Indian cuisine..." Devi G. - "Being of South Indian heritage (though I grew up in NY) I can comfortably say that here's a restaurant that has very authentic cuisine. The dosas are done just the way I like them, the sambar is to-die for and the chutneys are bursting with flavor. I've already made my fourth visit there - they only opened a few weeks ago - and recently tried the onion pakoras, the cochin calamari and the chile coriander uttapam...I'm heading back soon to work my way through the rest of the menu...!" Jon R. - "...They have a nicely thought out list of wines - the 2004 Penalolen Savignon Blanc from Chile's Limari Valley stood up beautifully to the spices and was fairly priced a $7 a glass but a bargain at $26 a bottle. ..." Tara M.- "...I actually think the curries stand out among the other items on the menu -- I really enjoyed the pepper chicken and tamil lamb curries, both of which featured incredibly tender meat and complex, tasty sauces. Also be sure to get the delish channa masala with a giant piece of bhatura (fried bread). Last but not least, I love mango lassis, and the one I had here measured up..." Adam m. - "There is now one (but only one) place to get good indian food in SF. We wanted to hug the staff for a meal that reminded us of London…” Michie D – “Terrific addition to the Valencia strip! The food is delicious, mostly vegetarian, and a good value…” Michael H. – “Wicked good. The soup causes just the slightest bit of fire breathing, due to the internal nuclear fusion inside of it, but otherwise, everything is extremely tasty…” Nish N – “What a welcome addition to the Mission, and to San Francisco for that matter. Dosa is a new restaurant that is at once modern and casual, definitely a few steps above your typical Indian restauarant…” Peter M. – “…Overalll this is a very satisfying dining experience featuring a healthy, exotic and affordable cuisine. This place fits well into Valencia Street with its variety of affordable and interesting ethnic restaurants. It is owned by a husband and wife team who have a fresh innovative approach to this classic South Indian cuisine." Sav B – “4 stars for the food and drinks... the lassi soju is pretty yummy. Food wise the dosa's (food not the place) are pretty tasty. I went for the masala (thats a staple) and of course it was crispy. The potato filling was delicious…” Jennifer B – “In the mood for something different? Grab a taxi (dont' drive, just don't do it) to 22nd and Valencia for some darn good eats. And I love that they serve Kingfisher beer. Enjoy!" Anjali K – “Finally, a South Indian place in the city so that those of actually *from* South India don't have to drive BACK to south india (aka Fremont) in order to get some traditional home food…” Kate l. - “i'll take a dose-a of dosa!! i tried my first dosa at dosa the other nite....and loved em. these are ginormous crepes (but kinda crispy - as a good crepe often is) - i mean they don't even fit on the plate! and the ones we got (i forget the names - but one had farmers cheese - which looked like chicken and lots of fresh salsa-ish vegetables and the other is the top of the menu - the country fave) were d-lish. we also enjoyed the lamb curry (very flavorful and warm and chunky) and for an appetizer we got the chicken something or rathers - which looked basic but had dynamite taste…” Melanie C. - “...Very tasty and I love the texture of the dosas themselves. Crispy outside but just slightly chewy or is it gummy inside.. Really good. The wine list (apparently chosen by the sommelier of Michael Mina) had several slightly sweet whites that went oh-so-sublimely with the spicy, spiced dishes. Mmmm. Can't beat it..." Eugene P. - "It's rare thing to go to a restaurant and not only enjoy the food you've ordered but also covet the food delivered to other tables to the extent that you're already looking forward to your next visit while you've yet to finish your first meal there...The service was great; our waitress was attentive, cordial, well-spoken, and witty" |
