- Finally, an (south) indian restaurant in the city! Posted by amitakam on 03/09/2006
"I love this place. I just moved here and have been searching for fabulous south indian cuisine at a good price- this place not only delivers that, but provides a fantastic ambience in a great location. I didn't have a reservation and showed up with a party of 13- the owners accomodated us and provided excellent food and service with a smile. I have recommended this new find to all my friends and will continue to do so. The dosas are incredible!"

- these dosas pass the street-cred test Posted by babuji on 03/19/2006
"As a hardened south indian dosa eater, i found the dosa consistency great - including the uncracked paper dosa. the rassam is extraordinary as is the chennai chicken gravy. you can get most stuffy made spicy enough for a range of tastes, including the roaring keralite type. good range of food even for newcomers to south indian food."

- Welcome South Indian Food! Posted by teresapiro on 03/26/2006
"Dosa is a trendsetter in the San Francisco culinary scene. Where else can you find authentic south Indian food? This restaurant has blessed the Mission district with a new flavor and flare. Very exciting! You have to try the Chennai Chicken and the Masala Dosa - both amazing! And check out their impressive wine selections - mmmm, a glass of Viognier to compliment the meal. Nice work Dosa!"

"I live in New York where there are so many GREAT restaurants and I was blown away by the food, staff and comforting ambiance. Definitely a fantastic restaurant and will remain high on my list of places I need to come back to over and over again. Any chance you'll open one up over here??? I need my DOSA!!!

- FANTASTIC !!! Posted by rhanda on 02/10/2006
“This would be a place which isn't stuck in the 70's (ambience) -- would be a place where I would go to eat if I was in India too. Food - FANTASTIC - actually AUTHENTIC and really really good --- starters / entree and desert --- TRY EVERYTHING

- Delicious food and hip atmosphere! Posted by darcitananda on 02/08/2006
“Dosa immediately stands out from other Indian restaurants because it actually has a nice atmosphere (no cafeteria here!). Minimalist with Indian touches, a great wine bar, and fun music. Waiting at the bar for a table is part of the fun. My husband and I found the masala dosa and idlis to be very authentic. Also the donut shaped savoury vadas are amazing! Channa batura is aromatic and flavorful, my favorite. The Tamil lamb curry is a rich and complex choice for those who need their meat. Rasmalai for dessert is "the best ever had" by my husband who grew up in India and has a thing for rasmalai. Service is very personal and we were remembered the 2nd time we went in.”

Perfect blend for all tastes Posted by centralcoaster on 02/11/2006
“Dosa is the perfect place to go if your party has people of varying tastes, as well as vegetarians and meat-eaters. I highly recommend any of the dosa plates, and loved the Medu Vada and the Dahi Vada. If you are non-vegetarian and up to eating something with a little kick to it, try the Tamil Lamb Curry or the Pepper Chicken. Both are delicious! And the comfort of having cheap parking just around the corner is definitely an added bonus.

finally south indian in the city! Posted by sfdc on 01/25/2006
great location, friendly and helpful staff. Food was excellent and authentic...even though at times is was low on the spice, I think they pitched it just right for the majority palate. All in all a wonderful experience and it saves me from having to go down south for my south indian fix.”

south indian at its best! Posted by jennyannboyle on 02/11/2006
“happily and gratefully, i'm here to report that i've found a new place that i will continue to frequent...it's called DOSA. this south indian restaurant has it all. fantastic food and a warm and inviting vibe...an incredible newcomer. when it comes to indulging in the flavors and essence of their mission - which is all about food - you can't/won't be disappointed. the soups are delicious. the chennai chicken and cochin calamari apps are awesome. as for mainstays, the chatini dosa, tamil lamb curry, prawn coconut masala and poori bread, are beyond belief. the combination of fresh, organic and perfectly prepared food, and warm breads for dipping in their succulent sauces, and atmosphere - bring the entire experience full circle.”

A happy marriage of hipness and authenticity Posted by arun70 on 02/26/2006
“Hats off to Dosa for its South Indian cuisine! It's great to take friends to an Indian restaurant that doesn't serve the usual creamy, oily, shapeless glop that passes for Indian food. I liked the ambience and the bartenders are friendly. It's nice not to be rushed to a table...the bar's a great place to have a beer and the wait isn't too long anyway. I'd highly recommend the vada-sambar as an appetiser. Try the masala dosa with the chutneys and the sambar...it's very authentic, and I should know - I'm from South India. Worth going back to again and again!

Great Food! Posted by mrs2be2006 on 03/07/2006
“...the food was terrific!...I've never had Southern Indian food before, let alone a Dosa - which turns out to be a nicely flavored crepe with herbs and spices meant to be shared and dipped in different sauces. My favorites for the evening were the firey broth, shrimp curry and any dosa!...”

Delectable food and scrumptious drinks Posted by laimuicheung on 01/23/2006
It's wonderful to have a neighborhood Indian restaurant where you can go and enjoy the food *and* atmosphere. I loved the Masala dosa and the lychee soju was exceptional. The service was great and I love the fact that there's a parking garage right around the corner. This is a must try !...”

DOSA is the real deal Posted by cboyle3 on 01/23/2006
“Our party consisted of 4 and we walked in on a cold San Francisco night to a warm and inviting space. Dosa has picked a beautiful color and lighting scheme that instantly warmed our hearts and the hint of curry and other goodies made our mouths start to water. The hostess was very accommodating and we enjoyed a glass of Pinot Blanc at the bar while our table was set. The wait staff worked in unison to deliver the Southern Indian treats quickly but with proper spacing so we could anticipate the next course. The food was fantastic and the assortment of Dosas really made sharing and comparing tastes and textures an event. We can't wait to go back!

Authentic food wrapped in Mission hipness Posted by snowy69 on 01/20/2006
We brought a friend who is from Bombay here, and he said the food was 'excellent'. I have had my fair share of dosas and idli in India myself and had to say the quality and presentation were out of this world. I'm used to eating Indian in more 'down home' settings, ie metal trays in very boring settings. Dosa gets it right for the Mission hipsters - the lighting and decor is right on. Also the prices are decent - I think my dosa was $7. Will go again and recommend to friends”

Delicious and succulent Posted by sg182 on 01/20/2006
I went to DOSA last night on the recommendation of a friend who raved about it. I rarely venture into the Mission but I'll be returning to eat here again. The onion pakora was a good first course to stave off our hunger. The dosa was so good I ate the whole thing with my fingers, the sambar (soup) was very rich (unusual for a vegetariuan dish) and my friend's lamb, which upon initially seeing the portion size, he said wouldn't be able to finish. I tried it and it was perfect. He ate the whole thing and polished off every grain of rice that accompanied it. All 4 of us at the table finished and smiled at each other acknowledging the meal was great - almost like a Sunday family dinner feast!...”

India Food - Great setting Posted by nitaspottery on 01/12/2006
The paneer dosa - a must try. My family loved the Chennai chicken - crispy and tender with the right amount of spices and flavor. Discovered it on our trip to San Fransico. Thanks guys for the great experience of having South Indian food in a chic setting, good choice of music and waitresses who made great recommendations...”

Delicious South Indian Cusine - very unique Posted by foodiedoodie on 12/19/2005
Loved the food. I'd never had south Indian cusine or dosa's for that matter…my favorite was the lamb curry, dosa's with the chick peas, dosa's with the cheese, and the sampler dosas…

Finally, a place I can call my own! Posted by devisimone on 01/04/2006
“Yes!!!! Having grown up as an American in New York City in a family of South Indian immigrants …the food is about as close as it gets to the dishes I’ve had at home and on my visits to South India…the hip atmosphere and décor resonated with my sensibilities as a first-generation American. The dosas (their signature dish) and the sambar, which is an essential accompaniment, were definitely one the best I’ve ever had…either here or in India…”

AWESOME! Posted by seeni on 12/18/2005
My friends and I had the best time! we didn't make reservations but the receptionist was extremely helpful and the food was amazing and the price was reasonable. Must try the Rasmalai and all of the dosas... yummy!”

when good potatoes die, they go to heaven Posted by cement_truck on 12/10/2005
this newcomer is one to watch. as a huge potato fan, i am so impressed. i've never seen my favorite starch served up so deliciously with an incredible blend of mystery …the wonderfully sweetand sticky rieslings took care of that need. and they were super well matched with the cuisine. we'll be back!”

Really good (authentic) South Indian Food Posted by dr_deadly on 12/08/2005
“we ordered, methu vada, masala dosa, paneer dosa, and scrambled egg dosa, and to my surprise, besides my usual favorite masala dosa, both egg and paneer dosa were tasty as well. we also ended up ordereing bottle of sparkling wine from new zealand, which went excellent with the food.”

a geek - "Dosa Restaurant - San Francisco, Easily the best Indian in the city today"

Yelp

Avery G.- "Two appetizers, two main courses, three beers and a "chai russian" - a variant of a white russian using chai and soju instead of Kahlua and vodka came to $61 without tax. We'll certainly return here - next time saving room to try one of the tempting desserts. "

Teresa P.. - "Dosa - the new Indian! Dosa is the best new restaurant to hit the Mission district. The Mission, so known for its eclectic mash-up of authentic restaurants featuring cuisine from around the globe, Dosa brings something even more unique - not just Indian food, but Southern Indian food. You have to try Chennai Chicken and the Masala Dosa - delicious! Choose a glass of wine or ask for a nice pairing suggestion from the friendly staff (or owners - a husband and wife duo) and the commendable dining experience gets taken to yet a higher level of amazing satisfaction - fine job Dosa!"

Max H. - "In the high school of restaurants within walking distance of my home, Dosa would be the cool exchange student that made friends with everyone quicker than you ever did. Delicious!"

Lee G.- "I was recomended by friends to go and try this new restaurant and what a breath of fresh air.A unique but delicious menu serving items that I have never tasted before but we loved everything we and will be back again before we leave San Fran .I especially loved the wine a Galleron merlot which was surprisingly affordable coupled with a new experience in Indian food that was awesome. The Dosas were to die for."

Janelle H. - "The second dish we ordered was the South inidan moons uttapam. it came w/ a variety of flat cakish bread: Potato, peas(or green onion), tomato and cheese, spinach, and white onion. came w/ the same dips and soups. this was absolutley delightful. its true, the flavors are tantalizing to the tongue"

Suzanne B. - "Best part - a very nicely balanced wine list. The mark-ups on bottles seem reasonable and the selections match the food very well. I could come back, sit down with dosa or two and happily work my way through the by-the-glass selections."

anita c.- "I was really pleased with how reasonable the prices were. For less than $45 per person, including tax and tip, we had 2 bottles of wine and a handful of beers, plus a ton of food. Our order included a refreshing chickpea salad, a pair of appetizers -- crispy-spicy potato croquets and lush lentil dumplings -- three dosai (paneer, egg, and rava masala), and two of the curries: a deeply spiced Tamil lamb, and a prawn coconut masala... oh, and a giant bathura. Each dosa came with its own bowl of sambar, plus two smooth chutneys: a gingery coconut one and a spicy tomato version."

Jamie T. - "I loved it! I've been visting in South India and I was missing so much the food there (breakfast with thick dosa like pancakes) with medium spicy yummy chutneys -that when I went to Dosa and found my favorite thick dosas I was very very happy!"

theo m. - "My wife and I have treked over from the East Bay twice now in 3 weeks to eat a Dosa as we were so intrigued and impressed the first time and convined the second! Dosa is the perfect meld of outstanding and original dishes, a warm and hopping atmosphere, and an eclectic and fair priced wine list. All we could ask for is a car service to take us home as we were far too full and happy to feel like driving or barting back. Open Dosa on College Avenue and we promise you will succeed!"

Jeremy H. - ""great food, awesome hosts, groovy atmosphere, gorgeous interior... but temper that with loud crowds and lots of valencia corridor hipsters. Go early in the week or early in the evening. the dosa's really are super tastay (as was every menu item we tried), and the beer/wine selection is wonderful."

Jill W. - "I went to Dosa on the opening weekend and am in love with the food. The atmosphere was really fun and enticing, and the food was a welcome change to typical Indian cuisine..."

Devi G. - "Being of South Indian heritage (though I grew up in NY) I can comfortably say that here's a restaurant that has very authentic cuisine. The dosas are done just the way I like them, the sambar is to-die for and the chutneys are bursting with flavor. I've already made my fourth visit there - they only opened a few weeks ago - and recently tried the onion pakoras, the cochin calamari and the chile coriander uttapam...I'm heading back soon to work my way through the rest of the menu...!"

Jon R. - "...They have a nicely thought out list of wines - the 2004 Penalolen Savignon Blanc from Chile's Limari Valley stood up beautifully to the spices and was fairly priced a $7 a glass but a bargain at $26 a bottle. ..."

Tara M.- "...I actually think the curries stand out among the other items on the menu -- I really enjoyed the pepper chicken and tamil lamb curries, both of which featured incredibly tender meat and complex, tasty sauces. Also be sure to get the delish channa masala with a giant piece of bhatura (fried bread). Last but not least, I love mango lassis, and the one I had here measured up..."

Adam m. - "There is now one (but only one) place to get good indian food in SF. We wanted to hug the staff for a meal that reminded us of London…”

Michie D – “Terrific addition to the Valencia strip! The food is delicious, mostly vegetarian, and a good value…”

Michael H. – “Wicked good. The soup causes just the slightest bit of fire breathing, due to the internal nuclear fusion inside of it, but otherwise, everything is extremely tasty…”

Nish N – “What a welcome addition to the Mission, and to San Francisco for that matter. Dosa is a new restaurant that is at once modern and casual, definitely a few steps above your typical Indian restauarant…”

Peter M. – “…Overalll this is a very satisfying dining experience featuring a healthy, exotic and affordable cuisine. This place fits well into Valencia Street with its variety of affordable and interesting ethnic restaurants. It is owned by a husband and wife team who have a fresh innovative approach to this classic South Indian cuisine."

Sav B – “4 stars for the food and drinks... the lassi soju is pretty yummy. Food wise the dosa's (food not the place) are pretty tasty. I went for the masala (thats a staple) and of course it was crispy. The potato filling was delicious…”

Jennifer B – “In the mood for something different? Grab a taxi (dont' drive, just don't do it) to 22nd and Valencia for some darn good eats. And I love that they serve Kingfisher beer. Enjoy!"

Anjali K – “Finally, a South Indian place in the city so that those of actually *from* South India don't have to drive BACK to south india (aka Fremont) in order to get some traditional home food…”

Kate l. - “i'll take a dose-a of dosa!! i tried my first dosa at dosa the other nite....and loved em. these are ginormous crepes (but kinda crispy - as a good crepe often is) - i mean they don't even fit on the plate! and the ones we got (i forget the names - but one had farmers cheese - which looked like chicken and lots of fresh salsa-ish vegetables and the other is the top of the menu - the country fave) were d-lish. we also enjoyed the lamb curry (very flavorful and warm and chunky) and for an appetizer we got the chicken something or rathers - which looked basic but had dynamite taste…”

Melanie C. - “...Very tasty and I love the texture of the dosas themselves. Crispy outside but just slightly chewy or is it gummy inside.. Really good. The wine list (apparently chosen by the sommelier of Michael Mina) had several slightly sweet whites that went oh-so-sublimely with the spicy, spiced dishes. Mmmm. Can't beat it..."

Eugene P. - "It's rare thing to go to a restaurant and not only enjoy the food you've ordered but also covet the food delivered to other tables to the extent that you're already looking forward to your next visit while you've yet to finish your first meal there...The service was great; our waitress was attentive, cordial, well-spoken, and witty"
